Japan Karate-Do Hayashi-Ha Shito-Ryu Kai

Shito-ryu is a style of karate-do that was founded by Kenwa Mabuni, emphasizing powerful yet artistic movements, character development, physical and mental fitness, and effective self-defense. Shito-ryu is one of the most most diverse and complete of the major karate styles today, with over 60 kata (forms) originating from Shuri-te, Naha-te, Tomari-te, and Shaolin White Crane. Hayashi-ha is a prominent school of Shito-ryu, founded and led by Soke Teruo Hayashi, until his passing in 2004.

At Sarasota Karate Club, students aim to unite mind, body and spirit. The ultimate goal of karate is not just technique perfection, but character improvement through humility, respect, control and compassion. The following DOJO KUN ("school code") is taken from the 20 Precepts of Karate, written by Gichin Funakoshi (father of modern karate-do):

  • Seek Perfection of Character
The importance of character building through discipline and training.
  • Be Faithful
To be sincere in everything you do, to be true to other people, your obligations and yourself.
  • Endeavor
Try your hardest at everything you do, every time you do it.
  • Respect Others
Keeping an open mind and an open heart, which is necessary to learn and grow.
  • Refrain From Violent Behavior
Doing no physical or emotional harm to another, and keeping a calm and peaceful mind. We use our physical defense training as a last resort.

Traditional karate-do is a lifelong journey. We practice and apply these principles both inside the dojo, and in our daily lives, striving to become the best version of ourselves.
